Indiana Conservation Voters statement on approval of AES Indiana rate case
INDIANAPOLIS—The following statement can be attributed to Megan Robertson, Executive Director of Indiana Conservation Voters, following Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) approval today of an AES Indiana rate increase that will continue to increase the financial burden on local ratepayers:
“Despite objections from Gov. Mike Braun’s newly appointed IURC and the Office of Utility Consumer Counselor, Indianapolis residents are going to see massive increases in their bills over the summer and beyond. This is the first rate case decided under the new commission—with the exact same results for Indiana customers.
“Monopoly utility companies continue to raise prices and pass along costs for fuel and other services to consumers. It’s not sustainable, and we are hopeful state lawmakers will take up these issues in the coming legislative session so Hoosiers don’t have to choose between paying to keep the lights on and other basic needs.”
Today’s increase ensures AES customers will be paying higher rates through the summer and well into the future. In May, the IURC approved a temporary increase that would add an additional average of $9.52 per month over the summer. Today’s increase will increase the base rates that will be in effect through at least 2030.
Last year, ICV partnered with consumer advocacy group Citizens Action Coalition to release the Help Hoosiers Now: Ratepayer Relief Plan, many elements of which have yet to be enacted.
